I am not sure of the significance of Putin's sign, but any way you slice it, these are two evil dudes.
Personally, I think that their union paves the way for the Russian invasion of Israel. Think about it; we are too strung out to get into another conflict, and Israel won't let Iran get the bomb...
Putin has made it clear that they will help Iran if they are attacked - if Israel attacks Iran, Russia has no choice but to retaliate against Israel.
Its a good thing we know how it all ends. Of course, I could just be a complete paranoid weirdo too. Either way, it is getting interesting.
